In the New York City area, Popeye cartoons were shown on WPIX-TV (11). Over the years, the hosts included "Captain" Allen Swift, "Captain" Ray Heatherton (also WPIX-TV's Merry Mailman), "Captain" Jack McCarthy, "Engineer Smokey Bill" Britten (better known as New York's Bozo the Clown), and Chuck McCann.
My afternoon routine on school days was to have milk and cookies and then watch Popeye cartoons. I couldn't get enough of 'em (the cartoons, that is).
When I was 6, I asked my mother to buy me a can of spinach because I wanted to be strong like Tarzan. Sorry to report that was the foulest stuff I ever put into my mouth. Fast forward to adulthood and I can't eat enough of the stuff!!
