Back in the '50s and '60s, there were only three broadcast TV networks (plus Dumont, for a while) and no cable networks.  There were also local independent stations that tended to show reruns, movies, children's programs, and cartoons.  Overall, though, the viewing choices were fairly slim.  So we had much more of a shared viewing experience than we encounter with today's wide range of entertainment choices.

You'll find many of "The [so-and-so] Show" hosts over in the Performers gallery, as they were also often movie stars or recording artists.

As for Friendly Giant, Front Page Challenge, and some others you've mentioned, I guess I'm not that familiar with Canadian shows; I'll see what I can do.

But CHiPs went on the air in 1977, and thus lies somewhat out of the bounds of this web site.

And did you mean Paladin? In the States, at least, the show was called Have Gun Will Travel.

Hey Duff! Question for you. When was Whirlybirds on and how long did it run for? I did like that show I and I do wish that they would put it back on the air. I will say that you do have alot of my favorite shows that I did like. That is so cool!
Posted by Duff at 12:34 am (PDT) on Sun May 2, 2010
Thanks, Gary. According to "The Complete Directory to Prime Time Network and Cable TV Shows, 1946-Present (sixth edition)" by Tim Brooks and Earle Marsh, Whirlybirds was a syndicated show, consisting of 111 30-minute episodes produced 1956-1959. I can't begin to tell you how tough it was to locate a photo.

You have the Brady Bunch and Catain Kanga roo. What about Catain Noah. Send your pictures to Dear Old Captain Noah; Send today, send right away. Come on people you don't remember this. I loved this show. Well the reason I am telling this is because Captain Noah's wife just passed away. Love and Best Wishes for a Graet Weekend Everyone.
Posted by Duff at 7:09 pm (PDT) on Fri June 24, 2011
Many, if not all, of the programs you mentioned were network shows originating in New York and broadcast nationwide. Growing up in New York, I found it difficult to know which ones were network and which ones weren't, as there were also local New York programs, such as The Merry Mailman with Ray Heatherton. Anyhow, Captain Noah appears to have been local to the Philadelphia area. I've added him to the Regional TV gallery.

Hi all....when I was a kid in Sydney, Australia, their was an American programme on tv which was like a situation comedy I guess. There was an average sort of couple and they had chimpanzees instead of children. I cannot remember why they had them.....but it was a cute and funny show and I cannot remember the name of it. Does anyone here remember what I am talking about????

The name of the show with the chimpanzees was "The Hathaways" and the chimps were "The Marquis Chimps". Hope this helps! By the way, the actress is one of my favorite comedic actresses, Peggy Cass who portrayed Miss Gooch in "Auntie Mame" with Rosalind Russell.
Posted by Helen at 11:56 pm (PDT) on Fri September 30, 2011
Thank you so much for the that. I have tried and tried to remember the name of this programme, to no avail. No one ever knew what I was talking about. It got to the point where I thought I had imagined it.
I am very grateful. The extra info was also most welcome. I agree about Ms Cass.....she was a very funny woman.

I remember a television show Terry and the Pirates, based on the comic strip. This would have been early 50s, and I think their sponsor was Canada Dry.

I have memories of a couple of kid shows from the early 60's. One had Mark Wilson and his wife Nani Darnell...I think it was The Magical Land of Alakazam. Great show! Another one that I feel like I imagined, but my siblings confirm was a kiddie show called Pip the Piper.
Posted by Kids TV Kid at 1:36 am (PDT) on Sat April 13, 2013
I remember "Pip The Piper"..the enchanting fellow who lived
in a magical kingdom in the clouds..where things grew on
trees. And he and his musical friend "Miss Merry Note" had to
deal with the antics of their bumbling friends "Paul The Pirate",
"Mr.Leader" and "Floogle Fish".

The show was on sunday mornings on ABC TV and then
it was rerunned on NBC TV during the early 1960's.
