I've stacked six 9V batteries in series for the "B" battery and works great. These things draw only a few milliamps so zinc-carbon 9 volts last a long time.

The Emerson radio in these photos is mine, and it still works (or at least it did the last time I shelled out for one of those 67.5-volt "B" batteries... they're probably $50 now). The heaters ran on one D cell, if you can believe that.

You'll find ads for an RCA "portable" radio in some National Geographic Magazines from the early fifties. How long could a battery last with one or more tubes burning?
