NASA's original seven astronauts (minus Deke Slayton for a heart concern) flew in Project Mercury. Some of the other guys, such as Gus, Alan and Wally flew in Gemini and/or Apollo; Alan being the only Mercury astronaut to walk on the moon (Apollo 14). Gus, of course, died in the Apollo 1 fire on January 27, 1967, along with White and Chaffee. Deke was finally cleared to fly on the joint US/USSR Apollo-Soyuz mission in 1975. John finally got to fly decades later in the Shuttle. Malcolm Scott Carpenter was more or less quietly dismissed after a near-mutiny during his Mercury flight.
