I thought that Magicubes differed from flash cubes by having a built-in battery, but apparently I was wrong. According to Wikipedia, anyhow, they used some kind of chemical reaction.

We used a paperclip to poke in the little slot on the bottom of the cube, press the little wire and make it flash on its own. For some reason, our parents frowned on that activity.

The first, and one of the best, cameras I ever owned was a Kodak that took a 126 film cartridge and flashcubes.
